Boy oh boy, this book review is going to be interesting. Hi everyone! I am super excited to be doing another Sophie reads. The summer time is when I read as many books as possible because I have the most time. This specific book, We Were Liars by E. Lockhart has been on my list to read for quite some time. A couple of beauty gurus that I watched have talked about this book and I became instantly interested.
Summary: This book is based on a family, the Sinclair family, who are extremely wealthy. There are three sisters, Carrie, Bess, and Penny and their children, Johnny, Will, Mirren, Liberty, Taft, Bonnie, and Cadence. As well as the head of the family, Harris Sinclair and Tipper Taft. The Sinclair's own this island off the coast of Massachusetts, Beechwood. Every summer, the family goes to this island. This story is through the eyes of Cadence Sinclair Eastman , the first grandchild of Harris and Tipper. Something happened when she was 15. An accident. After that accident, she did not return to Beechwood for two years. When Cadence returns to the island after two years, the memories start coming back about that fateful night during summer fifteen.
My Opinion: Oh wow. Honestly, when I first started this book and for a good portion of the book, I did not like it. The writing style was extremely strange to me. I did not know if the way it was written was because of Cadence accident and because of her severe migraines or if it is the writing style of the author. I really do not know. But I did not like it. It was not like it was hard to read but some of the parts were confusing because I had no idea if it was meant to be a metaphor or if it actually happened. You will understand what I am talking about when you read it. But I do want to say that I really enjoyed the ending. I was not expecting it at all. Even though I did not like the writing style, the build up of what happened during that fateful night was pretty intense. Especially during the last 100 pages. This book is extremely short, it's about 230 pages. It is honestly the perfect summer read. But I want to talk about something that I found very interesting. This book is about an extremely rich family but this family is not perfect at all. Throughout this whole book, there were plenty of times where it was sad to read some of the scenes where the parents and grandparents were fighting over stupid things like a table or a pair of earrings. But it really showed you that no matter how much money you have, money does not equal happiness. A lot of people wish they were extremely wealthy and rich but just reading about this family, I would rather be happy than be as miserable as the Sinclair family. Even though it is not a true story, I have a feeling that some of the story line might have some truth to it. I do recommend this book as a summer read. This is the perfect book to read by the lake or by the beach. It is a quick read but you will constantly wonder what happened during summer fifteen.
I really hope you enjoyed this Sophie reads. I love writing these for you, it is so enjoyable and it just makes me reflect on a good book. I hope you all have a wonderful day/night.
Carpe Diem,
Sophia
